Are you underutilizing the strategic potential of your directory? Rethinking directory services in the cloud era

Reimagine what you can do with with cloud directory services and enterprise automation, by checking out an informative webinar by Greg Keller of JumpCloud and Markus Zirn of Workato.

The cloud era has changed directory services. No longer just a list of internal employee information such as IP and email addresses, the cloud directory is a dynamic set of connected credentials that’s used to control access to various internal resources, such as IT permissions. A cloud directory serves as the single source of truth for identity, and it allows for central administration. Considering that reports indicate 83% of enterprise workloads will be in the cloud by 2020, it follows that organizations require a cloud native solution to directory services.

The Untapped Potential of Your Internal Contact List

Cloud directory services like Active Directory, Okta, or JumpCloud can be used to optimize processes across the business in tandem with automation. Organizations can maximize the value of their cloud directory by linking the directory to automated processes for HR, Cybersecurity, and IT, like:

  • Automating employee onboarding and access provisioning
  • Securely offboarding employees with access revocation
  • Automatic installation of printer drivers based on wifi connections
  • Centrally governing IT activity
  • Resolving insider security threats

Why cloud directory services automations are revolutionary

The traditional paradigm for integration is to perform batch syncs of data, for example syncing customer records or contacts between applications. Automation, a step beyond integration, works with processes- accelerating business processes and orchestrating automated workflows across multiple applications. Automations working in tandem with directory services take this to an even more comprehensive level.

By using directory services in automated processes, an individual users’ level of permission, location, and other employee data can be tied to automated processes- enabling a granular degree of optimization and customization of automated processes. This degree of control and customization is especially valuable for enterprises that envision achieving wall-to-wall automation, because it facilitates scaling automations with remarkable security and control.

Cloud-based automation and directory services work together to transform business processes

JumpCloud is a pioneer in cloud-based directory services. Today, SaaS-focused venture capital firms are backing JumpCloud, and more businesses around the globe rely on JumpCloud for cloud directory services. Additionally, both companies’ technology activates the dynamic potential of an organization’s existing processes and resources through connectivity. Likewise, Workato’s enterprise automation platform has transformed automation for the cloud era. Clearly, there’s a lot of synergy between the two companies. As Workato’s Markus Zirn notes, “the possibilities of what JumpCloud and Workato can do together in the IT space is limitless.”

How the Uber of SE Asia, Grab provisions 4x faster and queries the directory 30x faster with Directory Services Automation

Grab, an O2O platform in Southeast Asia providing services ranging from food delivery to raid hailing, and which notably bought out Uber’s Southeast Asian operations, turned to JumpCloud and Workato to deploy a unique range of automations that accelerate provisioning and improve operational efficiency.

Automated provisioning

When there’s a new employee in Grab’s HRIS, the event triggers the automation to create a  new user in JumpCloud. Grab auto-provisions Windows machines for new employees, with no manual labor involved. The machines come pre-loaded with approved applications. This takes ¼ of the time that it used to take to provision Windows machines.

Directory queries

Grab used to have a tedious process for querying the directory- an API call that resulted in information that was difficult for a human to understand. Now, they Grab’s uses ChatOps in Slack with JumpCloud and Workato. It takes less than a minute to retrieve information that used to take 30 minutes to get. Additionally, the information is presented in an easily legible format. According to Shawn Song, Senior Manager of IT Systems at Grab, “We’re saving 200+ hours a week of IT time based on this automation alone.”
