But many articles stop short of explaining <em>how<\/em> to actually start and design high-impact agentic solution. This article gives a practical look at how Workato\u2019s SAP Center of Excellence (CoE) is developing a scalable, end-to-end agentic solution for our internal SAP landscape using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Workato ONE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u26a0\ufe0f Disclaimers: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) Every SAP estate is unique, and what works for us may not be a 1:1 fit for every other organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) Our SAP-focused agentic solution is evolving alongside Workato\u2019s platform capabilities and is in internal beta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog2workato.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/SAP-Basis-Geneie-in-Workato-Go.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog2workato.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/SAP-Basis-Geneie-in-Workato-Go.png\" alt=\"SAP Basis Genie in Workato GO\" class=\"wp-image-41453\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">SAP Basis Genie in Workato GO<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Starting with Why?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gartner predicts that around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2025-06-25-gartner-predicts-over-40-percent-of-agentic-ai-projects-will-be-canceled-by-end-of-2027\"><strong>40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027<\/strong>. <\/a>(Interestingly, that\u2019s also when <strong>mainstream support for SAP ECC<\/strong> ends!) So before diving into the \u201cHow,\u201d let\u2019s take a step back and explore the \u201cWhy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>Workato<\/strong>, we manage multiple SAP ERP systems \u2014 from the legacy <strong>ECC<\/strong> to <strong>S\/4HANA<\/strong> with the latest FPS \u2014 across a variety of use cases including demos, POCs, training, development, and testing. These systems host several <strong>clients (CLNTs)<\/strong> for Sandbox, Development, QA, and more, and we support all five SAP user types. Often, our end users don\u2019t require UI access, but instead need <strong>connectivity (e.g., RFC, OData)<\/strong> for their SAP orchestrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don\u2019t use <strong>SAP GRC, IDM, CUA<\/strong>, or any non-SAP tools like <strong>SailPoint<\/strong> for centralized user governance across SAP systems. Our goal is to build an <strong>agentic solution<\/strong> \u2014 entirely on <strong>Workato\u2019s AI stack<\/strong> \u2014 with <strong>zero custom ABAP coding<\/strong> in the SAP ERPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our organization has an in-house <strong>SAP Basis Administrator<\/strong> responsible for user governance. The agentic solution \u2014 internally known as <strong>SAP Basis Genie<\/strong> \u2014 is designed to support a rapidly growing SAP user base, scale with organizational needs, assist with user lifecycle operations, and enable anomaly detection across SAP user accounts. It should operate both <strong>with and without human intervention<\/strong>, serving three primary personas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Users without SAP expertise<\/strong> requesting API access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Users with SAP expertise<\/strong> requesting both UI and API access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SAP Basis Admins and BT teams<\/strong> who need proactive insights and automation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, our goals are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Empower users<\/strong> through conversational AI and self-service scenarios<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Free up SAP Basis Administrator time<\/strong> for strategic initiatives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eliminate the need<\/strong> to invest in third-party SAP user governance tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enable AI-driven<\/strong> proactive SAP user sanity checks and alerts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our focus is on creating an <strong>agentic solution<\/strong> that is <strong>scalable, modular, and robust<\/strong>, with strong governance and seamless integration points with other <strong>Workato projects<\/strong> within the same workspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog2workato.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/SAP-Architecture-Overview.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog2workato.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/SAP-Architecture-Overview-1024x751.png\" alt=\"SAP Architecture Overview\" class=\"wp-image-41454\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">SAP Architecture Overview<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UIs and Agentic Apps<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These interfaces are <strong>tailored to specific end-user personas<\/strong> and their respective user journeys. Most users interact with <strong>Genie<\/strong> through <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/go\">Workato GO<\/a><\/strong>, while the <strong>SAP Basis Administrator<\/strong> has access to all interaction channels \u2014 and additional capabilities \u2014 thanks to <strong>MCP integration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Genies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each <strong>Genie<\/strong> bundles together <strong>Skills, Grounding, and Events<\/strong> with a specific <strong>LLM<\/strong> and <strong>UI<\/strong>, forming a purpose-built <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/agentic\/agent-studio\/create-a-genie.html#create-a-genie\">Workato Agent<\/a><\/strong>. Keep in mind that <strong>LLMs vary in performance and SAP literacy<\/strong>. Depending on the user persona, user journey, and chosen interaction channel (e.g., Workato GO, Slack, MS Teams), you may need to <strong>maintain multiple versions or variations<\/strong> of the same Genie to optimize experience and accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill Recipes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this design, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/agentic\/agent-studio\/create-a-genie.html#create-skills\">Skill recipes<\/a><\/strong> are <strong>fully decoupled<\/strong> from direct SAP and non-SAP application connections or orchestration logic. This approach ensures <strong>scalability<\/strong> and a <strong>clear separation<\/strong> between the <strong>Agentic<\/strong> and <strong>Orchestrate<\/strong> layers within Workato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knowledge Base (KB) and Event Recipes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/agentic\/agent-studio\/create-a-genie.html#create-a-knowledge-base\">Knowledge Base recipes<\/a><\/strong> focus on managing documents within the KBs assigned to <strong>SAP Basis Genie<\/strong>.<br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/agentic\/agent-studio\/app-events.html#app-events\">Event recipes<\/a><\/strong>, on the other hand, maintain a strict focus on reactivity and proactivity: most are <strong>reactive<\/strong> (responding to user prompts), but in certain scenarios, <strong>Genies act proactively<\/strong>, triggered by defined events or schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">API Recipes and MCP Enablement<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most <strong>exciting aspects<\/strong> of the solution. The potential of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/redir\/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs%2Eworkato%2Ecom%2Fen%2Fmcp%2Ehtml&amp;urlhash=N4jE&amp;trk=article-ssr-frontend-pulse_little-text-block\">Workato as <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/mcp.html\">an<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/redir\/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs%2Eworkato%2Ecom%2Fen%2Fmcp%2Ehtml&amp;urlhash=N4jE&amp;trk=article-ssr-frontend-pulse_little-text-block\"> MCP server<\/a><\/strong> is often <strong>underrated<\/strong>. Unlike traditional API recipes, <strong>MCP API recipes<\/strong> are treated as <strong>another set of Agent Skills<\/strong>, scoped specifically to MCP clients\u2014just as Skills are scoped to Workato Genies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Function Recipes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/connectors\/recipe-functions.html#recipe-function-by-workato\">Function recipes<\/a><\/strong> are driven primarily by your <strong>agentic solution requirements<\/strong>. They form the <strong>core logic layer<\/strong>, designed for <strong>maximum reusability<\/strong> across multiple Agent Skills and APIs exposed to MCP clients. These functions are also <strong>composable<\/strong> (e.g., <em>Function A<\/em> can be called by <em>Functions B and C<\/em>).<br><em>Example:<\/em> an atomic check for user account availability in a specific SAP system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Utility Recipes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are your <strong>cross-solution helpers<\/strong>, used throughout the Workato workspace by multiple projects and builders. Each <strong>Utility<\/strong> should have a <strong>well-defined purpose<\/strong> \u2014 keep it simple, reusable, and generic. Any <strong>use-case-specific extensions<\/strong> should be implemented outside the Utility layer, using a <strong>bolt-on approach<\/strong> to maintain modularity and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connections<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/connectors\/prebuilt-connectors.html#s\"><strong>SAP connections<\/strong> are <strong>mission-critical<\/strong><\/a>. Configure them <strong>once<\/strong> for high stability, security, and zero downtime. Treat them as <strong>\u201cVIPs\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 with dedicated <strong>administration and governance models<\/strong> to ensure reliability and compliance across all environments.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical Advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep the Whole Solution in View<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Workato Genies<\/strong> and the <strong>Agentic framework<\/strong> exist to deliver the <strong>business value<\/strong> your architecture is designed to achieve. Always design with that broader purpose in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build a Coherent SAP Genie Skillset<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focus on creating a <strong>cohesive Workato SAP Genie skillset<\/strong>, not isolated Skills. Maintain visibility into how your <strong>Functions<\/strong>, <strong>Skills<\/strong>, and <strong>MCP APIs<\/strong> are interconnected. Identify and consolidate <strong>shared patterns<\/strong> to avoid redundant or overlapping Skills that complicate maintenance and scalability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balance Agentic and Orchestration Layers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid restricting your <strong>Orchestration layer<\/strong> to simple connectivity plumbing. Doing so leads to <strong>duplicated logic<\/strong> across Skills, making your solution harder to scale and maintain. Instead, design a <strong>reusable orchestration foundation<\/strong> that your Agentic components can build upon \u2014 ensuring consistency, modularity, and long-term efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create a Specialist SAP Genie, Not a Generalist AGI<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your goal isn\u2019t to build a general-purpose AGI, but a <strong>specialized SAP Genie<\/strong> with a clearly defined role. Use the <strong>\u201cWhat instructions should this Genie follow?\u201d<\/strong> section in the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.workato.com\/en\/agentic\/agent-studio\/create-a-genie.html#create-a-genie-profile\">Genie\u2019s profile<\/a> not only to define its <strong>role, tone, and skills<\/strong>, but also to set <strong>explicit boundaries<\/strong> \u2014 specifying what your SAP Genie <strong>will not<\/strong> do.
