Stanford researchers<\/a> found that frequent video conferencing can cause \u201cZoom fatigue\u201d\u2014exhaustion, anxiety, and burnout caused by over-using a platform like Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address this head on, my team implemented Standup Bot\u2014which lets you hold a chat stand-up on Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Workplace from Meta. It takes each of us just a few minutes and, unlike a daily Zoom stand-up, it doesn\u2019t zap our energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Standup Bot?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Standup Bot is a platform bot for Slack<\/a>, Microsoft Teams<\/a>, or Workplace from Meta that lets you configure and run stand-ups inside your business communications platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s based on the practice of the daily stand-up\u2014a daily team meeting where teammates stand up, one by one, to briefly share what they\u2019re working on, the progress they\u2019re making, and any blockers they face. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standup Bot lets you follow this traditional stand-up approach by pinging your employees every morning, asking them a few questions, and sharing their answers in your team\u2019s channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a closer look at how my team uses Standup Bot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Every morning, at 11am in the employee\u2019s time zone, Standup Bot notifies the team member in Slack that it\u2019s time to get started.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

          How to implement Standup Bot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          You can use Workbot by Workato<\/a> to easily add Standup Bot to Slack, Teams, or Workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Let\u2019s say you use Slack. To implement Standup Bot, simply type \u201c\/standup\u201d in your team\u2019s Slack channel. The bot will then ask you to fill out the time for holding the stand-up, the days to hold it, and the questions to ask your team.<\/p>\n\n\n

          When do you want to hold the stand-up?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          You can ping your entire team at the same time every day or you can choose to send notifications at a specific local time\u2014a great option if you\u2019re managing a global team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          My team\u2019s Standup Bot pings employees every morning within their respective time zone. This helps each employee identify their priorities that day and alert their manager to any blockers early on. And because Standup Bot shares everyone\u2019s stand-up responses in our team\u2019s channel, teammates can read each other’s answers, react, and reply to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          What questions do you want to ask your team?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Brandon Chew, a Presales Enablement Manager and resident \u201cBot Guy\u201d at Workato, says the typical stand-up prompts he sees are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          2. What were your wins from yesterday? <\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. What are your priorities for today? <\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. Any blockers? <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Standup Bot lets you ask whatever you want though, and many managers pick different prompts based on what they know will be most helpful for their teams or makes sense for their work.<\/p>\n\n\n

            \r\n\t\t\u201cI chose to have the bot start with \u2018How are you feeling this morning?\u2019 instead of just jumping into work. This gives the team a chance to talk about topics outside of work.\u201d <\/div>\r\n\t

            Standup Bot is highly customizable, with options that extend beyond the questions you ask and the schedule you set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            For example, if a colleague is OOO and you want to make sure work doesn\u2019t butt into their free time\u2014you can ask Standup Bot not to ping them.<\/p>\n\n\n

            The benefits we\u2019ve seen from using Standup Bot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            It takes just 10 minutes for each of us to complete a daily stand-up with Standup Bot, and we spend a few extra minutes (at most) reviewing and responding to our teammates\u2019 responses. Despite this minor time investment, it\u2019s allowed us to avoid lengthy meetings\u2014giving each of us more time to focus on our work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            It\u2019s also given our team (which is distributed across the country) a chance to bond over baking recipes, TV shows, sporting events, and much, much more. Though this might not replace the bonding that can take place in-person, it\u2019s proven invaluable for helping us feel connected to one another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Finally, holding meetings online and inside the application that our team already spends most of their time using offers benefits in and of itself. It\u2019s been minimally disruptive, as we don\u2019t have to switch over to another application; it\u2019s quick relative to in-person meetings, as it\u2019s easier to skim text than speed up a verbal conversation; and it\u2019s more efficient, since side discussions become threaded chats instead of verbal tangents.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n
