automation can address countless use cases for your business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you need to integrate applications in order to move data between them; or engage in data integration to help your analytics teams perform business intelligence; or leverage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uipath.com\/rpa\/robotic-process-automation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RPA<\/a> software to make existing processes more efficient; or integrate your trading partners in your company\u2019s business processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing these use cases (among others) usually requires adopting the appropriate combination of integration and automation platforms and tools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, such a toolset should be seen and leveraged as a single platform, which is architected, operated, monitored, and delivered as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In principle, this shared I&amp;A platform should be made available to users as a shared service that every authorized organizational entity and individual can use in a self-service fashion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-10-at-9.42.34-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-10-at-9.42.34-AM-1024x475.png\" alt=\"The ingredients of a shared integration and automation platform\" class=\"wp-image-27973\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shared infrastructure should be accessible to multiple personas, from developers to SaaS administrators to non-technical business users, and it should allow for enforceable governance policies, an end-to-end operational experience of the platform, and\u2014as a result\u2014additional technologies specifically geared towards enforcing governance and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clearly, implementing this type of shared I&amp;A platform requires a team that can select, procure, deploy, and manage these tools and deliver them according to well-defined guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/software-integration\/\">What is software integration?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Establish your integration and automation strategy team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, many organizations implemented an integration and automation team that focused on two areas:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developing the integration and automation strategy, which involves identifying use cases and opportunities, as well as the tools that optimally address them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementing and managing all of the integration and automation projects on behalf of various entities, such as application teams, analytics teams, and business functions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Progressive organizations are expanding and changing the I&amp;A team\u2019s role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it still owns the strategy, it\u2019s now focusing more on governance, enablement, and support-related initiatives\u2014versus implementation-related work\u2014to encourage application teams and business functions to build integrations and automations themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth noting that the I&amp;A strategy team can work with colleagues from a variety of different backgrounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This includes integration specialists who work in LoBs or subsidiaries; application developers, who need to consider integration and automation capabilities while building their applications; SaaS administrators, who need to tackle integration and automation use cases when implementing or updating their applications; and, in a growing number of cases, business technologists, that is, business users with some, if basic, technology skills.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Workato-21.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Workato-21.png\" alt=\"Before investing time and resources into your technology and your operating model, you\u2019ll want to think carefully about the strategy that\u2019s best for your business. \" class=\"wp-image-42431\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Design your integration and automation strategy&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before investing time and resources into your technology and your operating model, you\u2019ll want to think carefully about the strategy that\u2019s best for your business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help you pinpoint the best strategy, you can consider the following in sequential order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Business goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/strategic-benefits-integration-and-automation\/\">I discussed previously<\/a>, automation can deliver a variety of business benefits, including efficiency, improved experiences, agility, real-time insights, and innovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding your goals ultimately allows you to address the rest of the areas required in defining your strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you\u2019re merely looking for efficiency improvements, you may look to outsource your efforts (using a solution integrator, for instance) or simply rely on your I&amp;A strategy team for delivery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if you\u2019re primarily looking to innovate your processes, you\u2019ll want to keep the integration and automation implementations in-house and perhaps aim for a distributed delivery model.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Scenarios and use cases<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This involves identifying the specific use cases you want to address, whether that\u2019s application integration, process automation, mobile apps integration, APIs, B2B integration, etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Nonfunctional requirements<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll need to define your automations\u2019 requirements from a variety of perspectives, including scalability, availability, reliability, SLA, security, and compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Workato-22.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Workato-22.png\" alt=\"The more you aspire to achieve agility and fast innovation cycles, the more you target decentralized delivery.\" class=\"wp-image-42432\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Delivery model, governance and skills<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the goal(s) you\u2019ve set, the answer to this question is likely clear: the more you look for efficiency, the more you focus on centralized delivery. The more you aspire to achieve agility and fast innovation cycles, the more you target decentralized delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Architecture and technology platform(s)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to procure technologies that support your functional and nonfunctional requirements and that enable the chosen delivery model\u2014all while minimizing overlaps and underlaps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you want to enable business technologists, you must select platforms that support the notion of citizen integrator\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.workato.com\/the-connector\/citizen-automation\/\">citizen automator<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going through this cycle isn\u2019t a one-time effort.
